The Office, a popular television series, is officially getting an Australian version, endorsed by series creator Ricky Gervais. The show, called The Office Australia, has been ordered to series for Prime Video. It stars Australian comedian Felicity Ward as the lead character, Hannah Howard. Howard is the boss of the packaging company Flinley Craddick. The British version of The Office featured Gervais as a paper company boss named David Brent, and for the American version, Steve Carrell famously portrayed Dundler Mifflin boss Michael Scott.

The twist in The Office Australia involves the COVID-19 pandemic. The new boss, Howard, receives news from corporate that her office is closing down and workers are shifting to work-from-home. She decides to launch outlandish plots in order to keep her “work family” together, making promises she can’t keep. The show’s description reads, “She goes into survival mode, making promises she can’t keep and launches outlandish plots in order to keep her ‘work family’ together.”
The 13th Version of The Office
The Office Australia is the 13th version of The Office. Localized versions of the show have been created in Canada, Chile, Israel, and France. Gervais expressed excitement about the Australian remake, saying that “Office politics have changed a bit in 20 years, so can’t wait to see how they navigate a modern-day David Brent.”
Filming and Debut
Filming for The Office Australia will begin in June 2022 in Sydney, with eight episodes in the mini-series. The show is set to debut in 2024 worldwide, except for in the US. The Office’s Greg Daniels has not given up on rebooting the show in the US, but it’s been some time since there was any news about that. Carell has said rebooting The Office today is a bad idea because the climate has changed.
