NetherRealm Studios has recently released a new teaser trailer for Mortal Kombat 12, which further hints at a time reboot or time travel for the game’s narrative. The teaser features the second hand of a clock ticking up from 9 to 11 before skipping 12 entirely and moving straight to 1, with a galaxy reflecting in the clock’s glass face while sand is also present, presumably from an hourglass. This is the second teaser released by the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account following the initial teaser that featured a trickling hourglass filled with sand, which suggests that time will be a major focus of the game’s story mode.

Possible Storylines

Fans have been speculating that Mortal Kombat 12 could be a return to the past of the game, as a reimagining of the events of the first game, or even a unique prequel story. Given that Mortal Kombat 11 featured a time-travelling villain called Kronika as its primary antagonist and ended with one of its heroes gaining the ability to rewrite history, Mortal Kombat 12 could be a direct follow-up that explores similar themes.

In social media, fans have been given two phrases as clues: “Does anyone know what time it is?” and “It is almost time.” It is unclear if these teases are related to the content of Mortal Kombat 12, an upcoming full-length trailer, or a playful reference to the patience of franchise fans.

Mortal Kombat 12 was first announced during a Warner Bros. Discovery investor call, with CEO David Savlov mentioning that it is on track for a 2023 release. Since then, NetherRealm Studios has released teaser videos in the lead-up to a proper announcement, which is expected soon during the Summer Game Fest in June 2023, as NetherRealm and WB prepare for a grand reveal.

Although there is very little known about Mortal Kombat 12, the teasers have sparked conversations among fans, leaving plenty of room for speculation. With the hints of a time reboot or time travel, fans are excited to see what the game has in store for them.
