Disneyland’s beloved Fantasmic show is set to make a grand comeback next year, leaving fans eager to witness its enchanting performances once again. However, there is one significant change in store for the show. The iconic Maleficent dragon, which infamously caught fire during a performance in April, will no longer be a part of the spectacle. A Disneyland spokesperson expressed their commitment to delivering the best possible show for guests, stating, “Our goal is to always deliver the best possible show for our guests. With that in mind, we are planning the return of Fantasmic with new magic in spring 2024.” While fans may be disappointed about the exclusion of the fire-breathing Maleficent dragon, they can still look forward to an array of exciting entertainment offerings at Disneyland. In fact, the resort has already launched nightly entertainment on the Rivers of America this summer, with more delightful surprises planned for later this year.
Yahoo Entertainment further reports that after the incident involving Maleficent’s unfortunate ignition, Disneyland took precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its guests. They suspended the use of pyrotechnic effects at select parks globally. In light of this decision, the fire-breathing beast, affectionately known as “Murphy,” will not make an appearance in the revived Fantasmic show when it returns in the spring of 2024. By prioritizing safety, Disneyland is reinforcing its commitment to providing a secure and enjoyable experience for visitors.
A History of Fiery Mishaps
While the fire incident with Maleficent in April may have been the most recent mishap, it is not the first time such an unfortunate event has occurred. In 2018, a different version of the Maleficent dragon also caught fire during a parade at Florida’s Disney World resort. Initially, following the fire incident, Disneyland had planned to resume Fantasmic operations by Labor Day. However, the closure has been extended, and the exact reason for this extension remains undisclosed by Disney officials.
