According to James Gunn, the writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Zoe Saldana’s character Gamora was supposed to die in the film. Gunn had planned for the character to sacrifice herself, but he was persuaded by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Marvel producer Lou D’Esposito to spare her life. Gunn had known from the beginning of the Guardians series that Saldana only wanted to play Gamora “for so many years.”

Gunn mentioned that he had thought that it would be Gamora who would die in the second movie, and that Quill would learn something about himself. But Feige and D’Esposito talked him out of it, and he admitted that it was the right decision because it didn’t feel right to go in that direction.

Vol. 3’s Gamora and Saldana’s Exit

Gamora ultimately met her end in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos threw her off a cliff to obtain the Soul Stone. However, the Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be a different version of the character who doesn’t remember her past adventures with the Guardians.

Zoe Saldana will reprise her role as Gamora in Vol. 3, which is set to release on May 5th, but she has confirmed that this will be her last appearance as the character. She believes that the Guardians series will continue without her.

While Vol. 2 was a commercial success, it is expected that Vol. 3 will not perform as well at the box office. Some speculate that this is due to a growing “indifference” to MCU Phase 5.
